THE very first annual Neil Springthorpe Memorial Cup took place on Sunday at Werrington Sports Centre. Peterborough Rovers, Farcet United, new local team Boro Bar Jager Bombers and a Hampton Sports XI all entered the hat for a draw which saw Farcet United drawn against Peterborough Rovers and the hosts Hampton Sports paired against Boro Bar’s Jager Bombers.
Hampton went on to win their semi-final tie with a 2-1 win over the Boro Bar. Boro Bar earlier levelled through Cardin Pierre after the little striker capitalised on a lapse piece of Hampton defending to put past Lea Jordan but it was not enough as the hosts held on to progress to the final.
In the other semi-final tie Peterborough Rovers took an early lead thanks to a strike from wide man Marek Bihari however soon after the break Farcet United levelled thanks to a Gareth Shaw penalty but, it was his team mate Lee Hartley’s effort that ensured the Farcet boys got their place in the showpiece game against Hampton. 2-1 Farcet.
The final - Hampton Sports v Farcet United
Come the final both teams were clearly exhausted by their earlier exploits and a leggy Farcet United soon found themselves 1-0 down after 5minutes and it stayed that way until midway through the second half when two quick fire Hampton goals ensured the Swans were the first names on the cup, 3-0 the final score.
The Farcet United manager said “It was certainly a good day well organised and we are looking forward to next year already!”
Neil's brother said “We are extremely pleased with how things went not because we won it but because everyone appeared to have had a good day with the weather and bbq playing a big part! The cup is up and running now and we have something to build on in the coming years.”
The finalists all received medals which were presented by Sylvia Springthorpe mother of the late Neil Springthorpe who speaking in the event programme said “I would like to thank all the players, staff and everyone involved in making the memorial cup happen. Neil would be extremely proud and grateful.”
Hampton Sports would like to thank our friends at FARCET UNITED, PETERBOROUGH ROVERS, BORO BAR JAGER BOMBERS, Chromasport & Trophies, Far-awayART, Vivacity and the referees Rob, Paul and Geoff for all their help and support.
The NSMC has been established by the family and friends of the late Neil Springthorpe who passed away in February 2010 it is to mark and celebrate his life and his love of the game.
As a co-founder of the club we felt a huge desire to keep his name associated with us as we moved onwards with the football club he and Pep had worked so hard to establish and we feel this is a fitting way of doing that.
